<description><![CDATA[<p>Our guest today is <strong>John Fitzgerald</strong>, the Quaker Pastor at <em>Leesburg Friends Meeting</em> in Leesburg, Ohio (Highland County). <strong>John</strong> has written a book entitled <em>A Peaceable Pilgrimage: Quakers Migration and the Creation of Leesburg, Ohio, Highland County and Southwestern Ohio, 1775-1820</em>.&nbsp; Today he is going to tell us about the political rivalry between the methodist minister Peter Cartwright and Abraham Lincoln.</p>

<p align="justify">With these words, <strong>Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,</strong> issued a challenge to those who opposed his involvement in the efforts to gain civil rights for African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama, and across the nation.&nbsp; Explore the activities of Friends (Quakers ~ <em>The Society of Friends</em>) in this pivotal moment in our nation's history, including the <em>American Friends Service Committee</em>'s publication and distribution of King's inspiring &quot;<em>Letter From Birmingham Jail</em>.&quot;</p>
<p align="justify">A special exhibit opening will be held January 21st, 2008 at 7 P.M. followed by <em>Wilmington College's</em> annual <em><strong>Celebration of the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.</strong></em> at 7:30 PM.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal" align="center"><span><em>I have no idea, because I am a non-resistant, of submitting tamely to injustice inflicted either on me or on the slave. I will oppose it with all the moral powers with which I am endowed. I am no advocate of passivity. Quakerism, as I understand it, does not mean quietism. The early Friends were agitators; disturbers of the peace; and were more obnoxious in their day to charges, which are now so freely made, than we are. </em></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify"><strong>Lucretia Mott</strong> (January 3rd, 1793 ~ November 11th, 1880)<font size="2">)</font> is&nbsp; one of the greatest if not the greatest&nbsp;Quaker woman minister of the 19th century.&nbsp; She was dedicated to almost every form of social reform in the 19th century but especially to the&nbsp;abolition of slavery and women's rights. Beverly Wilson Palmer, the editor of the <em><strong>Selected Letters of Lucretia Coffin Mott</strong></em> shares her insights into the life and legacy of Lucretia Mott.&nbsp; Beverly will also be one of our major speakers at the upcoming <em>4th Annual Quaker Genealogy &amp; History Conference</em> entitled &quot;<em>A Woman's Place . . . <description><![CDATA[<p align="justify">Today Rosalie Yoakam comes for another visit and tells the remarkable story of Quaker <strong><em>Jane Finley Wales Nicholson</em></strong> (b. February 1st, 1806 in Iredale Co., North Carolina - d. September 9th, 1906 in Indiana), an early pioneer of the Waynesville-Harveysburg area.&nbsp; Jane and her husband, <strong><em>Valentine</em></strong>, were conductors on the <em>Underground Railroad</em> and were involved in other liberal reform movements of the time. Both Jane&nbsp; and Valentine Nicholson left memoirs of their lives.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p align="justify">Today on &quot;<em>Waynesville Voices</em>&quot; our guest is <strong>Rosalie Yoakam</strong>, a free lance reporter, writer and columnist.&nbsp; She contributes two columns to the &quot;<em>Dayton Daily News</em>&quot;.&nbsp; One is a personal column; the other is a local history column.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She is also an active member of the <em>Springboro Historical Society</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify"><span>The <i>Heritage Center</i> is now hosting the display: &quot;<i>Silent Witness: Quaker Meetinghouses in the Delaware Valley, 1695 to Present</i>&quot;, and, the next exhibit will be &quot;</span><i><span lang="EN">Some Considerations on Keeping Negroes,</span></i><i><span lang="EN"><font size="3"> </font></span></i><i><span>John Woolman and Other Anti-Slavery Friends</span></i><span>&quot;(April 1-June 22) which is being shown in conjunction with the upcoming <i>Quaker Genealogy &amp; History Conference</i> in April on the topic of&nbsp;<em>Anti-Slavery</em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify"><span>I would highly encourage our listeners, those who have any Quaker artifacts or journals in their possession and are wondering what to do with them, to consider a gift to the <i>Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center</i>. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify"><span><span>In our last podcast concerning a local Quaker involved in anti-slavery, we examined the life of &quot;<em>Public Friend</em>&quot;&nbsp; <b>Thomas Arnett</b>, an Orthodox Quaker Traveling Minister and preacher.<span>&nbsp; </span>Today we will tell the story of another local Orthodox Quaker, <b>Dr. Jesse Harvey</b>, and his wife <b>Elizabeth Burgess Harvey</b> who lived in Harveysburg.<span>&nbsp; </span></span>This family of educators and physicians&nbsp;was involved in the founding of the first <em>Black School</em> in Ohio at Harveysburg, the founding of&nbsp;the <em>Harveysburg Academy</em> (High School), were conductors on the <em>Underground Railroad</em>, and were ministers to the Shawnee Indians at the <em>Quaker Shawnee Mission and School</em> in Wapakoneta, Ohio and then later in Kansas Territory after the Shawnee were forced to migrate west in 1833.</span></p>

<title>&#34;Public Friend&#34; Thomas Arnett ~ An Orthodox Quaker Preaching Against Slavery</title>

<description><![CDATA[<span><p class="MsoNormal" align="justify"><span>In this podcast <strong>Karen </strong>thanks <strong>Larry Gara</strong> again for his presentation on our last podcast and reflects on his seminal contribution to the study of the <em>Underground Railroad</em>.&nbsp;The legends and folklore that have accrued around the <em>Underground Railroad</em> can be cozy and comfortable, but the real story is much more significant and so much more interesting.</span></p>

<p>In 1984 <strong>Mr. Gara</strong> won the <em>War Resisters League Peace Award</em> given by the <em>War Resisters League</em>.&nbsp; A pacifist of great conviction, <strong>Mr. Gara</strong> spent 3 and a half years in federal prison for refusing to register for the <em>World War II </em>draft.</p>

<title>Abijah O'Neall ~ A Testimony against Slavery</title>

<description><![CDATA[<span><p align="justify"><span>Pioneer Friend <strong>Abijah O'Neall</strong> was one of the founders of <em>Miami Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends</em> in <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Waynesville, <state w:st="on"></state>Ohio.&nbsp; His story is similar to the story of many Friends who moved their families from the South to the free territory of the old&nbsp;Northwest to escape from the evil influences of slavery.&nbsp; The earliest members of <em>Miami Monthly Meeting</em> came from <em>Bush River Monthly Meeting</em> of South Carolina.&nbsp; Other Friends came to the area from Wrightsboro, Georgia, North Carolina, and from the Mid-Atlantic States such as Pennsylvania.</span></p>

Cook Public Library</strong></em> in Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio.&nbsp; The village is located&nbsp;at the intersection of Rte. 73 and Rte. 42 in Wayne Township of Warren County.&nbsp; &nbsp;Waynesville is built on&nbsp;the side of a&nbsp;hill overlooking the <em>Little Miami River.</em>&nbsp;</p>
<p align="justify">Our library was founded in 1917 by Dr. Mary L. Cook, a Quaker <span>physician</span>.&nbsp; Her portrait (right) hangs in the foyer of the library.</p>
